My Sherman Hemsley story

When I found out that Sherman Hemsley has died last week, it made me pause and reminisce about him. His acting career has spanned most of my life. Even with 3 successive shows and cameos, his acting career was paramount and his celebrity status has kept him relevant in the entertainment industry.  His short stature has given people, like comedian Kevin Hart or Martin Lawrence, a positive role model to be inspire by and not let their height be a crutch to their success.

In 1998, I was in the Army and living in Fort Lewis, Washington. My mother and brother came up to visit me from California. We went to Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.  I always liked going to Vancouver and I have enjoyed my experience there. We arrived at our hotel to find out that the boy band, N-Sync, was, also, in town at the hotel across the street with a long line of teenage girl were waiting for them outside.

My brother was tired from the drive so, he stayed in the hotel to relax.  My mother and I toured the city and explored several location.  We ended up at Virgin records to do some CD shopping.  I was searching in the Rap/Hip hop section, when I looked over and noticed a familiar person in the Jazz section.

I wasn’t sure but I followed close as they heading to the cash registers. I grab my mom, paid for my CD, and headed outside.  He was only a few feet away from us. I called out to him, “Excuse me, Mister!” He, then, turned around and it was none other than Sherman Hemsley.  My mom stood there shock and speechless.  I, on the other hand, was too excited that I started to charade my answer with dance and one-liner because I forgot his name. He smiled and asked me to calm down.  I was astonished that he was able to walk the streets of Vancouver without being rushed by the public.

He took a picture with my mom and gave his autograph.  Then, he shook our hands and departed down the street.  My mom and I still talk about that moment.  To Sherman, thank you for the Jeffersons and Amen episodes.  Plus, being in Vancouver for my mother first Canadian visit.  May you rest in peace.

Actor Sherman Hemsley has died.

Nothing to do here

These one way streets confuse me
Why you over there?

What action is art?

The views of Sacramento are so obscure. So I put the views in Senryu(haiku with emotions). The city life is fast pace but I understand the point of the rush.

Days until Showtime

On January 12th, I was invited to do my first Solo Poetry feature in March.  I still have not got over the shock yet.  I keep thinking that it was a dream or something. But it is real.  I am going to be the Headliner at Joe Montoya’s Poetry Unplugged.  Mind Blown.

RAP IS POETRY

I am going to perform 10 poems and rap lyrics.  Now, why would I perform rap piece? Isn’t this a poetry show?  Yes, it is. But people resist to realize that Rap lyrics are just a sub genre of poetry. There is a poem style called Lyrics.

Lyrics are a form of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person. The term derives from a form of Ancient Greek literature, the lyric, which was defined by its musical accompaniment, usually on a stringed instrument known as a lyre.  They use the same poetical devices and concepts like sonnets used in Shakespeare’s plays. The art of rap derives from lyric poetry, accompany with music, to become songs instead of poems.

I was a novice poet when I was 9 years old but I switch over to be a rapper because I began to love the hip hop culture.  Plus, I could not breakdance or afford turntables (until I was 21). So, I was going to be a rapper. I have performed in groups and solo. I have made albums and recordings under the stage name RES.  I have listed blog posts below about being a Emcee to poet & DJ / Turntablist.

TYPES OF POETRY FEATURE

Now, I have seen and performed with several headline features at various venues.  There are two types of feature Poets: Reading poets and Spoken Word artists. For Reading poets or Poetry reading, the Feature Poet reads their or others poems aloud in front of an audience like a Speaker giving a speech.  Those type of feature can use their personality to invoke emotion the poem.  I rarely see this type as entertainment due to the separation with audience by paper.  But, the Spoken Word artists are performer, musician, and activist that would perform their poems like an actor on a grand stage.  Projecting the emotion towards the audience, these artist are animated with their actions and words. Spoken word artist fascinated me, since I was rapper before I became a poet.

So why do you call your feature: Split Personality?

charron-flyer-corrected

I have been an emcee for 30 years who has added additional skills (Deejaying, Turntablism, musician, producer, engineer, and entrepreneur) to extend my career.  I just started pursuing Spoken Word in 2003 to perform in Coffee shop and not dive bars. It took years to understand the matrix of Spoken word and Slam Poetry.  I have relinquish my rapping persona to be a poet.  It took a few friends to recognize that I am not performing at my full potential. So, I started to reintroduce Resolution (MC) to CharRon(poet).  This feature is the result.

Capital Idea

Hybrid Capitalistic

If US Capitalism resembles a car, it would resemble a Toyota Prius.  Prius base model uses gasoline to fuel the vehicle but it has a battery  The definition for Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. The United State does not fully conduct in a true capitalist country, due to the fact, the government intervenes consistently. So United States and Canada are running a Capitalist economy under a Socialist government. Overall, the concept of capitalism is a economical blueprint that is filled with socialist ideas.

Yet, society never teaches its citizens how to be poor. It does constantly remind that being wealthy means you can get anything you want. Hell, Society teaches little girls that they are princesses. So, with that kind of logic, doesn’t that make us kings and queens? Do you feel like a monarch? If your answer is No, then why do we lie to her. We celebrate the ideas of monarch and wealth but our forefathers of the United States rebelled the idea. We have followed a delusion that has plagued the social subconscious.

Minority Abuse

Minorities have been abused by capitalism.  Yet, they also want it. They kill for it, they steal for it, and they beg for it. The gatekeepers will remind you of paradise but do not want minorities there. Their tactics have grown:

  •  Controlling Blacks with the reminders of slavery to cannibalize and act violence towards each their own.
  • Promoting Deportation scares to illegal citizens and their family.
  • Showing favoritism to one race and / or class while oppressing the others.
  • Terrorizing ghettos or minority area with law enforcement and the legal system.
  • maintaining a poverty class with the distribution of wealth and services.

Civil right movements and organized groups were a spark towards change for equality.  Yet, State government  and law enforcement official have used corruption and terrorism to dismantle or weaken these movement.

These are questions we should find answers for:

  • Do they want racism to stop?
  • Do they want abuse stop?
  • Do they want the poor to prosper?

Zombie-Capitalism

We know that zombies do not exist but an apocalypse does.  United State has gone through several recessions and a few depressions over the centuries.  But, the government has figure out way to keep democratic ship afloat. Most effective way to resurge our country was wartime.  But that temporary crutch has run its course.

So, why would they want to separate the elite from the commoner, the educated from the uneducated,  or the haves and have-nots? There is a value, an advantage,  and power that only the ones who don’t have it; notice more. But officials have notice the problem with the system are getting extreme. The capitalism economy are starting to reveal weak points That uprising entrepreneurs are starting to exploit.  We are entering into a zombie-capitalism realm. Zombie-capitalism is decaying economic system that is decomposing but still being used to maintain order in this country.  The gatekeepers are attempting to maintain order with extreme tactics:

  • Militarize law enforcement
  • Gentrification
  • Overcrowded Prison system
  • Hostile takeover of federal Native American reservation
  • Corrupting Government officials

Even though the Trump presidency produce social rage, there is a storm coming and they are getting equipped for another Civil War.  Why are you not ready?

Welcome to the year 2017

Normally, I would write on some topic but I just wanted to say that I bless. I may not be where I want to be but it doesn’t mean that it is not obtainable. I have another year to do something extraordinary. It is a shame that most people can not maintain the obligation to their new year’s resolutions due to life situations or people’s moods. Well, this is a perfect time to do something to completion. I have told myself that I want to have more money in my pocket and have a better apartment but I have not started. I should be ashamed of myself. If I want something, then I better go get it. CRAZY as that statement sounds. No one thought that Donald Trump would be elected President. I rest my case. Now, I have 365 days to complete these resolution. Let’s get to work. I suggest you do the same. It is definitely going to be an interesting year.

National Museum of American Indians

Due to the Standing Rock incident  with the Dakota Access Pipeline,  I figured this will be a great blog post for today.

Cheshire and I embarked to the National Museum of American Indians. It was an remarkable place filled with relic of modern and ancient Native American that were living in New York State and around the world. I was intrigued by a essay from a Native American woman named Inshata-Theumba:

When the Indian, being a man and not a child, or merely an animal, as some of the would-be civilizers have turned him. fight for his property, liberty, and life, they call him a savage. When the first settlers in this country fought for their property, liberty, and lives, they were heroes. When the Indian in fighting this great nation win a battle it is called a massacre; when this great nation in fighting the Indian wins, it is called a victory.

This statement just goes to show you, the victors write the stories of their fallen enemies.  It did not take long for this statement to resurface.

Energy Transfer Partner wanted to build the Dakota Access Pipe Line from Bakken oil patch that links transmission route to the East Coast and Gulf Coast. But the pipeline will be threatening water quality and scared site of the Standing Rock Sioux.

Protestor started to arrive to interfere with the workers’ access point. This event  did lead to an riot with the Morton county Sheriff using tear gas and water hoses. This was another action United States has continue to mistreat Native Americans.

But a victory has arose. On December 4th, Army Corp of Engineering has denied Energy Transfer Partner request to build pipeline through Missouri River until a full environmental impact statement is completed. So operation has halted, but the war still continues. Protestors are leading divestment campaign against financial institutions like Well Fargo.

Protestors are concerned that president-elect Donald Trump and the government will intervene and assist with finishing the pipeline. This event will definitely be in the history books.

The Holidays (for Loners & Soldiers)

Soldier’s Mentality

I considered myself lucky. The soldier life has taught me about camaraderie and  appreciate my collection of friends and loved ones. Yet, even I have fallen victim to solitude for the holidays. The lonely feeling still remains, even though, the trainings and battles are behind me. So, I still carry a soldier’s mentality for the holidays: 1) Appreciate it with loved ones and family. and/or 2) Create new traditions while being solo. These ideas helped me survive those lonely hard times during the holiday.
